Development of the Stakeholder Fora

Through IADI's initiative and in collaboration with STAR-Ghana, a multi-donor pooled agency, the Shama District Fisher-folks Coalition on Oil and Gas was established. This coalition provides a platform for over 2,000 fishermen, fishmongers, and fishing-related businesses in the district to voice their concerns and advocate for their rights.

Advocacy & Addressing Issues

The Coalition addresses various injustices faced by fisher-folks due to oil activities in the Jubilee Oilfield. Fishermen have experienced collisions with seismic survey vessels, leading to damaged equipment and fishing gear. Restrictions around the Jubilee Oilfield have also resulted in the loss of traditional fishing grounds, reducing fish catch and worsening the plight of fisher-folks.

Relationship between fisher-folks

The Coalition, led by IADI, aims to foster a cordial relationship between fisher-folks and major stakeholders in the petroleum industry, including oil companies, the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation, Ghana Maritime Authority, Marine Police Unit, and the Navy. The coalition advocates for adequate compensation for fisher-folks whose equipment has been destroyed, and for the impacts of fishing restrictions and the increased presence of oil rigs and vessels

By empowering local fishing communities and fostering productive dialogue with industry stakeholders, we strive to mitigate the negative impacts of oil and gas exploration and ensure the sustainable development of the Shama District.
